Therapy for Children & Adolescents

Therapy for children and adolescents at Shared Journey Psychology is collaborative and tailored to the young person’s developmental stage and the specific concerns that have brought
them to seek support.

Therapy provides a structured and supportive space for young people to better understand what they are experiencing, strengthen skills where needed, and navigate emotions, relationships, and everyday challenges more confidently.

For children, therapy always involves active parent or caregiver participation. Parent involvement is an essential part of the process, supporting understanding, consistency, and change within everyday family life.

For adolescents, therapy offers a confidential and respectful space to explore identity, relationships, pressures, and transitions toward greater independence, while maintaining appropriate collaboration with parents where needed.

Children and teenagers may seek support for a range of reasons.  Sometimes concerns have built gradually; at other times, they emerge in response to changes or significant life events.

Common concerns we work with include:

  • Ongoing anxiety, worry, or fear (including social anxiety, separation anxiety, generalised anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms).
  • Low mood, persistent sadness, loss of motivation, or withdrawal from friends and activities.
  • Strong or overwhelming emotions, irritability, or difficulties regulating feelings.
  • The impact of trauma or other distressing experiences.
  • Friendship challenges, bullying, or navigating peer pressure.
  • Explorations around self, gender, and sexuality (we’re an LGBTQIA+ friendly clinic).
  • Concerns about self-esteem, confidence, or body image.
  • School-related stress or concerns.
  • Conflict withing the family, including difficulties with
    parents or siblings.
  • Suicidal thoughts, self-harm or other risky behaviours
used as a way of coping.
  • Emotional regulation and coping support for young people with ADHD, autism, or learning differences.

Child-Focused Parent Session & Consultation

Child-focused parent sessions are offered alongside a young person’s therapy or independently. Sessions focus on understanding the young person’s experiences in the context of their developmental stage, family relationships, and everyday world.

Child-focused parent sessions support caregivers to better understand their child’s needs and responses, and to develop ways of supporting emotional regulation, behaviour, and connection at home.

Parents or caregivers may seek support regarding emotional or behavioural challenges in their child, including anxiety, anger, low mood, difficulties with regulation, relationship concerns, or stress related to school or family life.
